Volunteer With Us. Wayside Kitchen is currently in its 24th year serving prepared meals to those in need in Greater Portland, and in its 13th year providing supplemental foods to area pantries and families through Food Rescue. This effort has only been possible through the dedication of over 5,000 volunteers from local churches, businesses, and civic organizations. The Value of a Volunteer. In 2007, volunteers contributed an estimated 45,000 volunteer hours. At $14.08 an hour, a value established by the national non-profit group “Independent Sector”, Wayside volunteers contributed a remarkable $633,600 of service. Without volunteers, Wayside would not be able to achieve its mission of ensuring all people have access to the food they need. Our Volunteer Needs.
