Volunteer With Us. Wayside Soup Kitchen is currently in its 22nd year serving meals to the homeless and poor of Greater Portland. Throughout that time not one meal has been missed. This effort has only been possible through the dedication of over 2,500 volunteers from local churches, businesses, and civic organizations. The Value of a Volunteer. In 2007 volunteers contributed an estimated 45,000 volunteer hours. At $14.08 an hour, a value established by the national non-profit group “Independent Sector”, Wayside volunteers contributed a remarkable $633,600 of service. Without volunteers, Wayside would not be able to achieve its mission of ensuring all people have access to the food they need. Our Volunteer Needs. Wayside needs volunteers for our lunch program Monday through Friday from 10:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., for our evening meal program from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m., for our food rescue program, and for our administrative office.
